The highly anticipated Citroen C5 X Plug-in Hybrid, Australia’s first plug-in hybrid from the French brand, will not be launching until the first half of 2024. The delay is due to supply and demand issues, with Citroen wanting to ensure that the demand for the vehicle is met at the time of launch.

The C5 X Plug-in Hybrid will be powered by the same 1.6-litre turbocharged PHEV system as the Peugeot 308 and 508 PHEVs. The vehicle combines a four-cylinder petrol engine that generates 133kW and 250Nm with an 81kW electric motor, resulting in a total output of 165kW. It also boasts an electric range of up to 59 kilometers from its 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

In terms of pricing and specifications, the C5 X Plug-in Hybrid is expected to carry over the existing C5 X petrol’s Shine specification. The petrol-only model currently starts at $57,760 plus on-road costs, so it is anticipated that the PHEV variant will have a starting price around $70,000.

While the C5 X Plug-in Hybrid may be delayed, it is worth noting that it is currently Citroen’s best-selling model in Australia. The crossover wagon has seen strong sales with 37 registrations in the first half of 2023, following on from 61 units sold last year since its launch in October.

In addition to the C5 X, Citroen is also considering bringing the all-electric e-C4 to the Australian market. The e-C4 features a 50kWh lithium-ion battery and a front-mounted electric motor with 100kW of power and 260Nm of torque. It offers an electric range of 350km and has a 0-100km/h time of 9.7 seconds in Sport mode.
