BMW Unveils Armoured Luxury Sedans Based on 7 Series and i7 Models
What happens when luxury and security come together in an armoured vehicle? BMW’s 7 Series Protection and i7 Protection have the answer.
BMW has taken the wraps off its latest armoured vehicles, the 7 Series Protection and the i7 Protection. These full-size luxury sedans, based on the new-generation 7 Series and its all-electric i7 counterpart, will be showcased at the upcoming Munich motor show. Let’s dive into the features and specifications of these impressive armoured cars.
BMW has introduced its newest additions to the armoured vehicle lineup, the 7 Series Protection and the i7 Protection. These full-size luxury sedans are built on the platform of the new-generation 7 Series and its electric variant, the i7. Anticipated to make their public debut at the Munich motor show in September, customers can expect deliveries to begin in December.
The BMW i7 Protection stands out as the brand’s first armoured all-electric car. Initially, it will only be available in the European market. BMW claims that the development of these armoured models was considered during the design process of the new 7 Series range, providing them with significant advantages over retrofitting armour to a finished vehicle later on.
The main feature that sets the 7 Series Protection and i7 Protection apart is the use of armour steel in the car’s supporting structure, known as the BMW Protection Core. This strong foundation ensures enhanced safety and protection for occupants. Additionally, these models feature protection-spec doors, an armoured underbody, safety glass, and a self-sealing fuel tank.
Both the 7 Series Protection and i7 Protection come equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with specially developed Michelin run-flat tyres. These tyres are designed to allow the vehicle to continue driving at speeds up to 80km/h even with no air pressure. This feature provides added peace of mind in case of a puncture or other tyre-related issues.
In terms of optional extras, customers can choose from a range of features to further enhance their armoured luxury sedan. These include a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguisher with automatic and manual discharge, flashing lights, radio transceivers, and even flag poles. BMW ensures that the customization options allow for a tailored and personalized armoured vehicle experience.
Boasting class VR9 protection, based on the standards set by Germany’s Association of Test Laboratories for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions (VPAM), the 7 Series Protection and i7 Protection are built to withstand various threats. To obtain the certification, these vehicles undergo a rigorous testing process where special protection elements are put to the test against firearms and explosive attacks. The safety glass used in these models is even touted to protect against 7.6×54 R ammunition.
While BMW has not provided specific figures for the additional weight of the armoured versions, they claim to have optimized the weight increase compared to previous models. This allows for a higher load-carrying capacity and improved body rigidity. The BMW 7 Series Protection is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system, producing a system output of 390kW and 750Nm of torque. The 7 Series Protection features an xDrive all-wheel drive system, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds.
On the other hand, the BMW i7 Protection is an all-electric model that shares its dual-motor all-wheel drive setup with the i7 M70 xDrive. With system outputs of 400kW and 745Nm, this electric powerhouse delivers impressive performance. The i7 Protection achieves the 0-100km/h sprint in 9.0 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 160km/h.
Despite the addition of armour, the 7 Series Protection and i7 Protection still offer a luxurious interior. Customers can enjoy standard features such as a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, an intercom, powered opening and closing doors, and electric roller sunblinds for the rear windows. Additionally, there is an option for a cool box integrated between the rear seats, complete with an eight-litre capacity and cooling capabilities at either 4 or 10 degrees Celsius. The interior surfaces and upholstery options mirror those available in the new BMW 7 Series, ensuring a seamless integration of luxury and security.
For over four decades, BMW has been manufacturing armoured vehicles, starting with flagship models like the 7 Series sedan and expanding to include the X5 SUV. The introduction of the 7 Series Protection and i7 Protection further solidifies BMW’s commitment to providing high-quality armoured vehicles for discerning customers.
