Lamborghini Teases Electric Grand Tourer Concept Ahead of Monterey Car Week
Can Lamborghini’s electric grand tourer concept strike the perfect balance between innovation and the iconic Lamborghini DNA?
Lamborghini has given a glimpse of its upcoming electric grand tourer concept, set to be unveiled at Monterey Car Week later this month. This teaser image provides a sneak peek of the brand’s fourth model line, scheduled to enter production in 2028. With promises of a new body style, new technology, and a fresh take on the iconic Lamborghini design, this electric vehicle is set to make a statement.
Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has kept the details under wraps, only hinting at a ‘new body style, new tech, and lots of opportunities to remake Lamborghini’. While the teaser image doesn’t reveal much, it does showcase an eye-catching front wheel arch and a bold roofline. The 2+2 seating arrangement adds versatility to the design, but whether this grand tourer will have a low-slung profile or a more rugged crossover stance remains uncertain.
Notably, the upcoming electric grand tourer bears a visual resemblance to the Estoque concept from 2008. This connection suggests a continuation of Lamborghini’s design language and a nod to its heritage. However, the platform that will underpin this 2+2 electric model is yet to be confirmed. Winkelmann has previously mentioned that it won’t be built on a bespoke Lamborghini architecture but will instead share components with other Volkswagen Group brands.
Lamborghini’s commitment to electrification is evident in its plans to introduce an electric 2+2 GT in 2028. However, the brand will face competition from Ferrari, which aims to launch its first electric vehicle in 2025. Nevertheless, Lamborghini has ambitious plans to electrify its entire lineup by the end of 2024. The brand has already revealed a hybrid V12 successor to the Aventador, a hybrid successor to the Huracan in the pipeline, and a V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain for the Urus SUV by 2024. By 2029, Lamborghini intends to make the Urus electric-only, showcasing its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2025.
To support its electrification plans, Lamborghini is investing €1.5 billion (A$2.34 billion) over four years, marking its largest investment to date. This substantial financial commitment reflects the brand’s determination to lead the way in the transition to hybrid and electric vehicles.
