Toyota Australia Teases Future Developments for HiLux Model to Rival Ford Ranger Raptor
Will Toyota’s future developments for the HiLux model be able to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor?
Toyota Australia has hinted that there are more exciting developments in store for the current-generation HiLux model, potentially including a new hero model to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor. While the recently released HiLux GR Sport is a tough off-roader, it is not a direct rival to the Raptor. However, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations, Sean Hanley, has confirmed that there is still more to come for the HiLux.
During a press conference for the HiLux GR Sport, Mr Hanley mentioned that the introduction of 48-volt ‘assist’ technology is planned for some models in 2024, but not for the GR Sport. However, he added that there are still more surprises in store for the HiLux.
In a separate interview with CarExpert, Mr Hanley discussed Toyota’s approach to product cycles and market demand. He acknowledged that there may still be ‘white space’ above the HiLux GR Sport in terms of customer preferences and willingness to pay. He specifically mentioned the Ford Ranger Raptor, which has a higher price point.
Mr Hanley emphasized that the GR Sport is not intended to directly compete with the Ranger Raptor, but rather serves as a unique offering in the market. He expressed the company’s interest in evaluating customer reaction to the GR Sport to determine if there is a need for a more hardcore HiLux model.
While Toyota may have already made a decision about the potential for a more powerful HiLux variant, Mr Hanley noted that the market is constantly evolving, and their strategy could adapt accordingly. He explained that Toyota takes its time to ensure high quality and reliability in their products, even conducting extensive real-world testing.
Regarding the HiLux Revo BEV concept, Mr Hanley implied that a production version in 2024 is unlikely.
The HiLux GR Sport has recently been released in Australia with various enhancements, including a more powerful engine, improved suspension, and distinct styling.
