Ram 1500 TRX: A Facelift and a New Engine
Are you ready to experience the power and style of the new Ram 1500 TRX?
Ram’s supercharged V8-powered 1500 TRX is making way for a Final Edition, but it seems the pickup truck is getting a second act. A facelifted version of the 1500 TRX has been spotted testing in Michigan, and it has one major change from the current model.
The biggest change in the facelifted Ram 1500 TRX is its new engine. Instead of the current 6.2-litre supercharged V8, the truck will be equipped with a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol inline-six cylinder. This new engine is already in use in the North American-market Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, where it produces 380kW of power and 677Nm of torque.
The new engine, known as the Hurricane 3.0-litre, is expected to produce even more power in the TRX. Car and Driver reports that it could produce as much as 410kW. While this is a step down from the outgoing V8’s 523kW, it still packs a punch. And while it doesn’t quite match the Ford F-150 Raptor R’s supercharged 5.2-litre V8, which produces 522kW, it does outshine the regular F-150 Raptor’s twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6, which produces 340kW.
Not only will the new engine power the facelifted TRX, but it will also replace the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 engine in other Ram 1500 models as part of a 2024 facelift. In its standard tune, the Hurricane six produces 298kW and 610Nm. The entire 1500 range, including the TRX, will also receive revised front-end styling and new tail lights as part of the 2024 facelift.
The new Hurricane engine shares some similarities with the four-cylinder Hurricane engines found in other Jeep models. It features a cast aluminium block, forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and an ultra-thin Plasma Transfer Wire Arc low-friction coating for the cylinder bores. To reduce turbo lag, there are two low-inertia turbos that feed three cylinders each.
In Australia, Ram Trucks are converted to right-hand drive by the Walkinshaw Group at the Melbourne Manufacturing Facility. The conversion process involves the addition of over 360 new locally designed components for the DS 1500 model, and even more for the DT 1500 and 2500 heavy-duty models. These right-hand drive Rams are specifically built for the Australian market.
Overall, the facelifted Ram 1500 TRX is set to impress with its new engine and updated styling. It may not have the same raw power as its predecessor, but it still offers plenty of performance and capabilities. And with its unique right-hand drive conversion, it’s ready to take on the Australian market with style and substance.
