Volkswagen has announced that the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz seven-seat electric people mover will be hitting the Australian market in the first half of 2025. This follows the upcoming arrival of the short-wheelbase ID. Buzz five-seater and the ID. Buzz Cargo electric commercial van, scheduled for December 2024. Additionally, pricing details for the short-wheelbase models will be revealed in the first quarter of 2024.
Over the weekend, Volkswagen showcased its electric Kombi at the Volkswagen Cronulla Surf Masters event, introducing it to the Australian public for the first time. The event also highlighted numerous classic Type 2 vans.
Prior to the event, Volkswagen Australia disclosed that they had received approximately 500 expressions of interest for the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo models.
The current short-wheelbase models of the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo are rear-wheel drive and feature a 77kWh (net) lithium-ion battery, as well as a single rear-mounted electric motor generating 150kW of power and 310Nm of torque.
According to WLTP testing, the range of the vehicle reaches up to 425km. It can be rapidly charged via DC charging at rates up to 170kW and AC charged at rates up to 11kW.
The long-wheelbase seven-seat model offers an additional 250mm between the wheels, resulting in a length of 4962mm. It is equipped with a larger 85kWh battery and a more powerful 210kW rear electric motor.
While Volkswagen has expressed its intention to introduce a dual-motor all-wheel drive GTX variant, its official confirmation is yet to come. The ID. Buzz GTX delivers a total system output of 220kW in short-wheelbase form and 250kW in long-wheelbase form.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles director Ryan Davies emphasized the unique combination of the ID. Buzz’s rich heritage and modern technology, making it a highly sought-after vehicle for families, retirees, tradies, surfers, and environmentally conscious individuals.
