Changan Mazda Introduces New CX-50 Hybrid with Toyota RAV4 Hybrid’s Drivetrain
Are you ready to embrace the future of hybrid vehicles with the CX-50 Hybrid?
Changan Mazda has launched the new CX-50 Hybrid in China, utilizing the same petrol-electric hybrid system found in the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. The hybrid variant of Mazda’s popular SUV is now available for sale in China, with plans for a hybrid version in the US as well. Let’s take a closer look at this electrified crossover.
The CX-50 Hybrid marks the first step in Changan Mazda’s electrification plans for the Chinese market. It was showcased at the Shanghai motor show last year, along with teasers for two upcoming electrified sedans. These sedans will offer both plug-in hybrid and battery electric drivetrains, catering to the demand for such vehicles in the Chinese market.
As for the CX-50 Hybrid itself, it shares its underpinnings with the Mazda3 and CX-30, featuring an extended version of their platform. The petrol-electric hybrid system, sourced from Toyota, combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with one or two electric drive motors and an E-CVT. The power output is similar to that of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, with the petrol engine delivering 131kW of power and 221Nm of torque, and the electric motor providing 88kW of power and 202Nm of torque. The AWD versions also have an additional electric motor on the rear axle, offering 40kW of power and 121Nm of torque.
In terms of pricing, the CX-50 Hybrid starts at 195,800 yuan in China, which is approximately A$42,139. This makes it more expensive than the petrol variants of the CX-50, but the hybrid drivetrain offers enhanced fuel efficiency. According to Chinese regulatory testing, the CX-50 Hybrid has a fuel consumption rating of between 5.1-5.66L/100km.
While the CX-50 Hybrid is not currently planned for release in Australia, Mazda has confirmed that there will be a replacement for the popular CX-5 SUV. It remains to be seen whether this will be an all-new CX-5 or a model with a different name. The CX-5 is Mazda’s best-selling model in Australia and continues to perform well in the market.
Changan Mazda produces the CX-50 for the Chinese market at its Nanjing factory, while the US production takes place in Huntsville, Alabama. The US-produced model is also exported to Canada, Colombia, and Mexico. Although the CX-50 and the Toyota Corolla Cross do not share the same platform, Mazda has stated that electrified powertrains, including a traditional hybrid model, are part of the CX-50’s future.
In conclusion, the introduction of the CX-50 Hybrid in China demonstrates Changan Mazda’s commitment to electrification. With its Toyota-sourced hybrid system, the CX-50 Hybrid offers a blend of power and efficiency. While it may not be available in Australia, Mazda has exciting plans for the future, including a replacement for the CX-5.
