Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly gifted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a Russian Aurus Senat Limousine – despite United Nations sanctions.
During Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia in September 2023, Putin personally showed him one of his black armoured limousines, and Kim expressed his liking for it.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Kim Jong Un was offered the car as a gift, emphasizing the strong relationship between Russia and North Korea.
Despite the UN sanctions that prohibit supplying luxury items to North Korea, the Russian Government denied any violation.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized the sanctions and highlighted the importance of providing basic necessities to people affected by them.
The North Korean news agency KCNA reported that Kim Jong Un accepted the gift and expressed his gratitude towards Putin, considering it as a symbol of their special relationship.
Aurus Motors, a Russian luxury car manufacturer, started producing civilian models in 2021 and its assembly has recently begun in the United Arab Emirates.
The Aurus Senat Limousine, which costs over A$330,000, features a powerful 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and offers ballistic protection according to international standards.
In addition to the Senat, Aurus also offers the Komendant SUV.
