GMSV Considers Bringing Electric Pickups to Australia
Will GMSV’s exploration of electric pickups lead to a new era of sustainable and powerful work vehicles in Australia?
General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) is exploring the possibility of introducing large electric pickups to the Australian market. The company, known for its V8-powered Chevrolet Silverado pickups and Corvette sports car, is evaluating models such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV. GM Australia and New Zealand managing director Jess Bala stated that they constantly assess the suitability of different vehicles for their market, considering factors such as local demand, pricing, and conversions. While the current trucks meet customers’ needs, GMSV will explore electric variants in the future.
General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) is contemplating the introduction of large electric pickups to the Australian market. While the company’s main offerings have been V8-powered Chevrolet Silverado pickups and the iconic Corvette sports car, they are now evaluating the potential of models such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV Down Under.
Jess Bala, the managing director of GM Australia and New Zealand, explained that GMSV is always evaluating which vehicles would be the right fit for their market. They consider a range of factors, including trucks, SUVs, smaller EV models, and more. The decision ultimately hinges on local market conditions, price points, and the need for conversions.
Regarding the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Bala mentioned that it is currently only available in left-hand drive. If GMSV were to bring it to Australia, it would require conversion. However, they prioritize the capability requirements that their customers demand, such as the ability to tow 4.5 tonnes. Currently, the existing trucks meet these requirements effectively.
GMSV plans to launch its first electric vehicle, the Cadillac Lyriq, in Australia by the end of this year. Beyond that, they have hinted at forthcoming announcements regarding new electric Cadillac models for the Australian market. While the specific models have not been disclosed, GMSV has already filed trademark applications in Australia for potential names, including Optiq, Escalade iQ, and Vistiq.
GMSV entered the Australian market in late 2020 and currently offers the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500 HD, and the Corvette. The Camaro was previously available as well. In early 2025, GMSV plans to introduce the GMC Yukon Denali full-sized SUV, which will be remanufactured in Melbourne by Walkinshaw, just like the Silverado pickups.
