MG Motor Plans to Release Smaller Electric Vehicle in Australia

Will MG Motor’s smaller electric vehicle be the game-changer the market has been waiting for?

MG Motor, known for producing affordable electric cars in Australia, is reportedly working on a new smaller vehicle to complement its existing lineup. The head of product and planning at MG Motor UK, David Allison, has confirmed that the project is already underway. With a target release date in the second half of 2025, this new electric vehicle aims to offer a combination of affordability, range, and size.

The MG 4, currently one of Australia’s most affordable electric cars, may soon be joined by a smaller sibling. MG Motor UK’s head of product and planning, David Allison, revealed that the project is already in motion. Although the release is still a couple of years away, with a target launch in the second half of 2025, Allison is confident that the new vehicle will be a success.

The new electric vehicle is expected to be B-segment or smaller, measuring around four meters in length. With a price tag of approximately €20,000 ($33,068), it will aim to cater to the needs of cost-conscious consumers. Allison believes that by offering a combination of affordability, range, and size, MG Motor will be able to capture the attention of the market.

The current MG 4, measuring 4287mm in length, is priced at $39,990 in Australia. Its closest competitor in terms of size, the Dolphin from BYD, is slightly smaller at 3780mm but comes at a lower price point. However, MG Motor aims to bridge this gap with its upcoming smaller electric vehicle. In Germany, the MG 4 is priced at €34,990 (A$57,846).

MG Motor already has a smaller electric vehicle, the Comet, in its lineup, but it is only available in India and will not be sold in markets like Australia or Europe. Therefore, the introduction of the new MG 2 will fill a gap in MG Motor’s global portfolio.

The naming convention for MG Motor’s electric and combustion-powered vehicles can be confusing. For example, the MG 4 and MG 5 sedan are both small cars, but the former is electric while the latter, available in Australia, runs on petrol. Furthermore, the brand has different versions of the MG 5 for different markets: a sedan and a wagon, one powered by petrol and the other by electricity.

While it is unclear whether the new MG 2 will be offered in Australia, MG Motor is actively expanding its electric vehicle lineup in the country. In addition to the MG 4 and the upcoming MG 3 hybrid, MG Motor has plans to release the Cyberster roadster and a new version of the Marvel R crossover, both of which are likely to be available to Australian consumers.
