BMW to Discontinue Petrol-Powered 4 Series, Focuses on Electric Models
Will other luxury car brands follow BMW’s lead and focus on electric models?
In a move to streamline its product lineup, BMW has announced that it will not be renewing the petrol-powered 4 Series for a third generation. However, the brand will continue to offer the 4 Series range with electric models under the i4 badge.
Despite not being considered one of BMW’s legendary names, the 4 Series has proven to be a strong seller since its introduction in 2014. According to BMW Blog, the petrol-powered 4 Series has performed well in the USA and has even outsold the Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and convertible in Australia last year.
However, with the upcoming release of the next-generation 3 Series, which features a sleeker design, BMW feels that offering both the 3 Series and the 4 Series would be redundant. As a result, the petrol-powered 4 Series will not be renewed for a third generation.
While the petrol-powered 4 Series will be discontinued, the extended 4 Series range will still be available with electric models. The i4 badge will continue to be used for an electric coupe and convertible, providing consumers with a stylish and eco-friendly option.
The decision to discontinue the petrol-powered 4 Series is part of a larger trend among German luxury car brands, who are looking to streamline their product offerings and focus on more profitable models. Mercedes-Benz has already merged its C-Class and E-Class coupe ranges, and there are reports of other models, such as the CLS four-door coupe, also facing the axe. Additionally, the small A-Class and B-Class models from Mercedes-Benz are rumored to be on the chopping block as well.
By shifting their focus to electric models, BMW and other luxury brands hope to increase their profits and cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles.
- The petrol and diesel 4 Series range has been successful in the market, particularly in the USA and Australia
- The next-generation 3 Series is expected to encroach on the 4 Series’ territory
- BMW plans to focus on electric models, with the i4 badge continuing to be used for an electric coupe and convertible
With the discontinuation of the petrol-powered 4 Series, BMW is prioritizing their electric offerings and positioning themselves for future success in the automotive market.
