Toyota Fortuner to Receive Fuel-Saving Mild-Hybrid Technology
Is the future of Toyota vehicles greener than ever with the introduction of mild-hybrid technology?
The Toyota Fortuner is set to join the hybrid bandwagon with the introduction of fuel-saving mild-hybrid technology. Here’s what we know so far:
The Toyota Fortuner, a popular body-on-frame SUV, is going green with the addition of mild-hybrid technology. According to Indian publication Gaadi Waadi, a mild-hybrid version of the Fortuner is expected to hit the Indian market in 2024. This follows an announcement by Toyota South Africa that both the Fortuner and HiLux will receive mild-hybrid powertrains in their market in the same year.
It’s unclear whether the Australian market will also see the introduction of the mild-hybrid Fortuner. While the Indian and South African versions of the Fortuner are manufactured in their respective countries, the Australian-specification models are produced in Thailand. However, there is precedent for hybrid Toyota vehicles in Australia, with two other body-on-frame models set to receive 48V mild-hybrid technology in 2023.
One of these models is the Toyota HiLux ute, which has been confirmed by Toyota Australia to receive 48V mild-hybrid technology in the first half of 2024. The system combines a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine with a small electric motor-generator and a 48V battery, resulting in improved fuel economy, drivability, and reduced noise levels. Toyota has decided not to label the vehicle as a hybrid, instead referring to it as the Toyota HiLux with 48-Volt Technology. The system will be standard on certain HiLux models and will offer an automatic stop/start feature.
Additionally, the new-generation Toyota Prado SUV is also expected to feature the same mild-hybrid powertrain when it launches in Australia in mid-2024. This technology aims to provide both fuel efficiency and a smooth driving experience while maintaining the vehicle’s towing capacity of 3500kg.
At this time, it is unknown if any other Toyota models will receive the mild-hybrid technology.
- A mild-hybrid version of the Fortuner is expected to launch in India in 2024.
- Toyota South Africa plans to launch a mild-hybrid Fortuner and HiLux in their market in 2024.
- Toyota Australia has confirmed that the HiLux ute will receive 48V mild-hybrid technology in the first half of 2024.

With the Toyota Fortuner, HiLux, and Prado all set to receive mild-hybrid powertrains, Toyota is making strides towards a greener future. These new technologies offer improved fuel economy and enhanced driving dynamics without compromising on towing capacity or capability. As the automotive industry continues to embrace hybrid technology, it’s an exciting time for car enthusiasts and eco-conscious drivers alike.
