Chery Omoda 5 Receives Top Safety Rating in Australia
Are you ready for a safer driving experience with Chery’s Omoda 5?
Chery’s comeback in Australia has been a success, with strong sales and improved safety ratings. The Omoda 5 model has received a five-star rating from ANCAP based on Euro NCAP testing. This is a significant improvement compared to Chery’s previous models in the Australian market. Let’s take a closer look at the safety features and performance of the Omoda 5.
The Omoda 5 has achieved a five-star safety rating from ANCAP, showcasing Chery’s commitment to improving safety standards. This is a major improvement compared to Chery’s previous attempts in the Australian market.
ANCAP evaluated the Omoda 5 based on Euro NCAP testing and gave it high scores in various protection categories. The model received an adult occupant protection rating of 87%, a child occupant protection rating of 88%, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 68%, and a safety assist rating of 83%.
One of the standout features that ANCAP praised in the Omoda 5 is its front end design, which effectively minimizes the risk of injury in a collision with another vehicle. The vehicle-to-vehicle ‘compatibility’ of the Omoda 5 also received one of the best scores to date.
However, ANCAP did identify a few areas of concern. The hard elements of the dashboard were flagged as a potential source of knee injury risk for individuals who do not have the same shape as the crash test dummies. Penalties were therefore applied to reflect this issue.
Another penalty was given due to a head-protecting side curtain airbag that did not open as intended in the side impact test. This resulted in an Adequate rating for driver’s head protection in certain scenarios.
To address these concerns, Chery updated the Omoda 5’s lane support software for the Australian market. ANCAP conducted additional tests to assess the impact of these updates. While the local vehicle did not respond effectively in a small number of emergency lane keeping test scenarios, the overall Safety Assist score remained within the five-star threshold.
In terms of autonomous emergency braking, the Omoda 5 received a Good rating for its system’s ability to detect and respond to other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. It also performed well in reversing and intersection turning scenarios.
ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg commended Chery for the marked improvement in safety ratings compared to its original market entrants a decade ago. She encouraged Chery to continue refining and improving the safety performance of their vehicles in future models and updates.
The Omoda 5 comes with a range of standard safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, emergency lane keeping, integrated cruise assist, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic assist, traffic jam assist, traffic sign recognition, driver attention monitoring, and front, front-side, and curtain airbags. The higher-end EX variant also includes a surround-view camera.
