What do you think of Cupra’s DarkRebel shooting brake concept?

Cupra unveiled its DarkRebel all-electric shooting brake concept at the Munich IAA 2023 auto show. If given the go-ahead for production, the DarkRebel will be priced at ‘considerably less’ than €100,000 (A$167,040) and may share its platform with the upcoming all-electric Porsche Cayman.

According to Cupra’s Chief Operating Officer, Sven Schuwirth, the DarkRebel shooting brake concept will be priced significantly below €100,000 to avoid competing with luxury brands. Cupra aims to position itself as a contemporary brand targeting younger generations. Therefore, they need to make the DarkRebel more affordable and within reach.

In terms of the platform, Schuwirth confirmed that a bespoke platform is not feasible for the DarkRebel. Instead, it is likely to share an existing platform within the Volkswagen Group. This is advantageous because the group offers various platforms and technologies. However, Schuwirth did mention that the DarkRebel may utilize a future platform.

The possibility of the DarkRebel sharing running gear with the upcoming Porsche Cayman was also raised. Schuwirth hinted that this prediction could be accurate. To achieve the desired performance at an affordable price, Cupra needs a suitable platform. Starting with a low-cost car and then introducing a much more expensive model wouldn’t make sense.

The next generation of Cayman and Boxster will be all-electric and will utilize the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform. This platform will also be shared by other Volkswagen Group vehicles like the Audi Q6 e-tron and the next Porsche Macan. Porsche is aiming for a weight of 1655kg for the next Cayman, with an electric range of at least 400km. The current base model of the 718 Cayman weighs 1365kg, while the Taycan electric vehicle ranges from 2072kg to 2358kg depending on the variant.

Porsche plans to offer single- and dual-motor electric powertrains for the future 718 models. The more powerful versions may feature a second electric motor at the front, providing performance comparable to the 911 family. Despite this, Porsche isn’t concerned about cannibalization between the 718 and 911, as they will have different propulsion systems.
