Alpine is making a comeback with the A310, a new all-electric sports car that aims to rival Porsche. Alpine is bringing back the A310 nameplate, but this time, it’s going all-electric. The upcoming A310 will be one of seven new electric vehicles from Alpine, as the brand embraces a greener future. The inspiration for the A310 comes from its predecessor, the iconic A310 sports car. Design director Antony Villain explains that they wanted to create a 2+2 sports car, combining the nostalgic elements of the A310 with modern electric power. The team at Alpine is hard at work finalizing the design and aims to have it ready in a year and a half.
While the joint chassis development program with Lotus has been suspended, Alpine remains committed to creating a performance-oriented platform for its electric vehicles. The A310 and A110 will have a similar relationship to that of the Porsche 911 and 718 Cayman, with the A310 being a compact four-seat sports car that aims to become an icon of future sports cars.
According to Alpine marketing director Bruce Pillard, the A310 will retain the characteristics that have defined Alpine throughout its history. Despite being electric, the A310 will still offer the DNA of agility and lightness that enthusiasts expect from the brand. Pillard emphasizes the importance of preserving this feeling of lightness, even with a battery-powered car.
The A310 revival is just one part of Alpine’s ambitious plan to transition from a niche brand to a volume seller. In the coming years, Alpine will introduce the A290 hatchback, based on the Renault 4 and 5’s CMF-BEV platform, followed by a C-segment Crossover GT. Alpine also has plans for mid-sized and premium SUV models, aiming to compete with Porsche’s Cayenne and Macan.
Not content with a purely electric lineup, Alpine is also working on a prototype vehicle with a hydrogen internal combustion engine, building on the success of last year’s Alpenglow concept car. By breaking into the US and Chinese markets, Alpine hopes to achieve exponential growth, targeting an operating margin of over 10% and an annual revenue growth rate of 40% from 2022 to 2030.
