Kia has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the EV5, which is set to hit the Australian market in 2024. The production of the EV5 will take place in both Korea and China, with Australian-specification models sourced from China.
Contrary to previous reports, the EV5 uses the same E-GMP dedicated all-electric architecture as other Kia and Hyundai models, including the EV6 and EV9, as well as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. This ensures a reliable and efficient electric driving experience.
In the Chinese market, the EV5 is available in three different variants: Standard, Long Range, and Long Range AWD. The Standard model features a front-mounted 160kW electric motor and a 64kWh battery pack. According to lenient CLTC testing, it boasts a driving range of up to 530km. The Long Range model has the same front-mounted motor but with a larger 88kWh battery pack, offering a range of up to 720km. The Long Range AWD model takes it up a notch with a rear-mounted electric motor and a 70kWh battery pack, resulting in a system output of 230kW and a range of up to 650km.
One of the standout features of the EV5 is its fast-charging capability. It can be charged from 30 to 80 per cent in just 27 minutes, making it convenient for those on the go. Whether you’re on a road trip or running errands, the EV5 has you covered.
While it’s unclear how Australian-specification models will differ from the Chinese-market versions, Kia has made sure that the EV5 is engineered to perform in various climates. The battery pack features an advanced head pump system that effectively manages the battery’s temperature, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.
Inside the EV5, you’ll find a host of innovative features. The curved display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system, providing a seamless user experience. Additionally, there’s a 5.0-inch display for the tri-zone climate controls and an optional head-up display. The EV5 also introduces a new unified graphical user interface for audio-visual, navigation, and telematic screens, providing a modern and intuitive interface.
In terms of comfort and convenience, the EV5 has it all. The seats are covered in recycled PET fabric and Bio-PU leather upholstery, showcasing Kia’s commitment to sustainability. The front-row bench, available in Chinese-market versions, offers versatile seating options. Other features include ‘relaxation’ seats with a massage function, ‘comfort’ seats with heating and ventilation, and a front centre armrest with storage and an integrated table. The EV5 even comes with a full-flat folding second-row ‘camping seat’ with a rear console refrigerator/warmer.
When it comes to safety, the EV5 doesn’t disappoint. It is equipped with Highway Driving Assist 2, which helps drivers maintain distance, stay centred in their lane, change lanes, and adjust lateral positioning. Rear cross-traffic alert, remote parking functionality, and digital key functionality are also included.
While pricing details for the EV5 are yet to be announced, the larger EV6 range starts at $72,590 before on-roads in Australia. So, keep an eye out for updates on the EV5’s pricing.
